- Description: The Nissan X-Trail has a new off-road themed variant in the Rock Creek, but do its tougher looks create a stronger package?

Nissan is expanding the X-Trail lineup in Australia, centred around three new variants of the e-Power hybrid (now with front-wheel drive) as well as the purely petrol-powered Rock Creek.

The [X-Trail Rock Creek](https://torquecafe.com/nissan-news-xtrail-rock-creek-price-australia/) arrives as a part of the SUV nameplate’s 25th anniversary in Australia, and at a time when Nissan is looking for a big boost in sales, amid rising competition from rival brands.

We’ve already looked around the new front-drive X-Trail e-Powers ([which you can read here](https://torquecafe.com/car-reviews-2026-nissan-xtrail-epower/)), but how does the Rock Creek stack up as an alternative not only to the rest of the range, but also other mid-sized rivals such as the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage?

## How much does the Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek cost?

Priced from $48,315 plus on-roads, the Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek is $2435 more than the ST-L upon which it’s based.

Like most of the X-Trail petrol variants, it’s a seven-seater, one of the few three-row options in its class.

## What’s under the skin of the Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek?

Australia doesn’t receive the e-Power version of the X-Trail Rock Creek overseas, with local examples only offered with the standard powertrain of the all-wheel drive X-Trail.

This consists of a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing up to 135kW of power and 244Nm of torque. The engine drives all four wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Despite its more off-roady looks, the X-Trail Rock Creek features no changes to its suspension compared to standard versions of the SUV, with Australian examples also missing out on all-terrain tyres – something fitted to US-made versions, sold in that market as the Rogue.

## What features does the Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek have?

Unique equipment on the Rock Creek is largely limited to cosmetic changes, with the X-Trail’s ‘V-motion’ grille going black and incorporating a three-slot top, inspired by the D21 Navara ute.

Elsewhere there are black roof rails and mirror caps, a unique lower front bumper, orange exterior highlights and 18-inch black alloy wheels with orange highlights, its design sets it apart from the rest of the X-Trail range.

The Rock Creek is also the only member of the SUV’s family available in a new Baja Storm exterior finish, which is complemented by a black roof.

Inside, the cabin’s changes include nylon-trimmed seats with embroidered Rock Creek logos, as well as orange contrast stitching.

Like higher-equipped X-Trails, the Rock Creek gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, rather than the X-Trail ST-L’s 7.0-inch TFT display, as well as a 10.8-inch head-up display.

Other features such as automatic LED headlights and high beams, heated mirrors, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, six-speaker sound system, dual-zone climate control and heated front seats with 10-way power adjustment carry across.

## How does the Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek drive?

If you’re looking for a supple, well-handing mid-sized SUV, the Nissan X-Trail is hard to go past, and the Rock Creek continues with its successful formula.

There’s nothing particularly exciting about how the X-Trail goes about driving, it just executes everything well.

The seats in the Rock Creek are perhaps one of the biggest standouts, providing additional bolstering compared to other variants, delivering greater comfort on longer drives, while also giving more support when the going gets a bit twisty.

It’ll never give the same dynamics as the Z – not that you’d expect it to – but in such a competitive market where there are so many alternatives, it’s nice to get behind the wheel of something which doesn’t roll around as you’d expect from an SUV.

Across the bumps and undulations of New Zealand’s country roads, it never felt uncomfortable, delivering a ride quality that’s hard to find across the market, let alone in a mid-sized SUV.

The quietness of the cabin is also a stand-out quality, though the petrol engine under the bonnet does make its presence known when you get on it – more on that later.

Perhaps the serenity inside would have been reduced had it been fitted with the missing all-terrain tyres, as well as provide it with a unique selling point compared to its stablemates.

Though you’d never expect an X-Trail to traverse particularly difficult terrain, the fact that the off-road driving we took part in was also handled by the hybrid X-Trail e-Powers shows the main driving focus of the Rock Creek is its appearance, with the name adding no other credentials.

It’s not a new thing, with even the Subaru Outback Wilderness sold in Australia not coming as standard with the all-terrain tyres fitted overseas, as customers instead have to cough up $1300 to have them fitted as an accessory.

But for the X-Trail Rock Creek, it feels a bit of a missed opportunity to not fit all-terrain rubber from the get-go, giving those who have seen the promotional materials added confidence to take it straight from the dealership showroom to the camping trails.

Back to how the X-Trail drives, the Rock Creek delivered in Australia is only available with a petrol engine, which is mated to a CVT automatic, providing a predictable if not dull driving experience.

Jumping from the X-Trail e-Power to a petrol-only version, the non-hybrid SUV is noticeable in its mass, and sorely lacks the torque from the electric motor of its siblings.

While quiet at constant speeds, mashing the throttle nets a roaring response under the bonnet, with the CVT holding the revs high at a drone.

This powertrain combination is also not as frugal as you’d hope, with a circa-200km loop netting fuel consumption figures in the 9L/100km range, above its 7.8L/100km claim, despite being at more constant and favourable speeds.

Though the interior can also be viewed as dated, it’s refreshing in the number of physical controls which can be found throughout the cabin, with essentially all high-use functions being at the touch of a button.

The infotainment screen is nothing exciting, though in a world full of cars with screens the size of an old TV, it may not be the turn-off you fear.

## Should you buy a Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek?

In the most endearing way, the Nissan X-Trail is the kind of SUV you’d tell your parents or your friends to buy if they wanted something dependable, easy to use and – user subjective – good looking.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/b3/a9b3e204-3117-4792-9a32-46184029df44/content/images/2026/10/2026-Nissan-X-TRAIL-Rock-Creek-008.jpg)

There aren’t many other SUVs which can feel this good on a long road trip, though with those slightly higher than ideal fuel consumption figures, stops will be a bit more frequent to top up the tank.

It’s a very nice place to be, and the Rock Creek styling ticks many boxes, but there’s still that lingering feeling about if it would be better – or at least unique – if it had the tyres to back it up.

In a market where there are so many more frugal and widely equipped vehicles of this size for the money, it's hard to give the Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek a definitive thumbs up, but there is undoubtedly an audience to support it.
