# BMW M2 to go out with a bang

BMW’s M2 often steals the limelight away from its bigger M3 and M4 siblings, and now there are rumours a send-off version of the sports coupe will go one step further.

Bimmerpost forum user ‘ynguldyn’ – who has accurately compiled future BMW model information for almost a decade – has said “there will be one more version of \[the\] G87 M2” prior to the end of the current-generation model.

The poster provided no further details, other than reiterating previous timelines for production of the G87-generation M2 ending in March 2029, just over two and a half years away.

This means we don’t have any idea of when the new variant will launch, nor what shape it’ll take before its arrival.

BMW’s first-generation ‘F87’ M2 was available in base guise, followed by the more powerful M2 Competition and finally the M2 CS, with the latter being its final iteration prior to being succeeded by the G87.

So far, the current M2 has been available in base rear-wheel drive guise since its 2022 launch, followed last year by the M2 CS (complete with the same engine as the M3 and M4), and most recently the all-wheel drive M2 xDrive.

At this point there can only be speculation as to what the future M2 variant will be, though it’s unlikely to be outdone by the CS in terms of raw pace.

In other BMW models such as the M3, the brand has celebrated the manual transmission with the CS Handschalter, available as a three-pedal only, but limited to the US market.

Likewise, it could launch an M2 CS xDrive, pairing the higher outputs and lighter weight of the CS with all-wheel drive grip.

BMW has already launched a series of upgrades for the M2 through its M Performance Track kit, consisting of additional aerodynamic aids, plus height and ride-adjustable suspension.

With this kit, the standard M2 is able to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife 14 seconds faster than the base M2 coupe, but also half a second quicker than the lighter and more powerful M2 CS.

It’s possible this package could also make its way to the G87 M2’s swansong.

What is completely unknown is the future of the M2 nameplate, given there are no rumours about a third-generation model to replace the G87.
