Porsche Australia has recalled 77 cars equipped with racing-style, centre-lock wheels, amid a global recall of the 911 and 718 (Cayman and Boxster).

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the road wheel centre-lock nuts may fracture. This could cause the wheel to loosen and detach from the vehicle whilst driving,” Porsche said in its [recall notice](https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-006756?ref=torquecafe.com).

“If a wheel detaches from the vehicle whilst driving, it could result in a loss of vehicle stability and control, increasing the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

The recall impacts 2024 model year versions of certain 911 variants (GTS, GT3, GT3 RS, S/T, Turbo, and Turbo S), as well as the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and the 718 (Boxster-based) Spyder RS.

Unlike traditional wheels which are secured by four or more wheel nuts, Porsche’s centre-lock wheels are similar to those from racing cars, with just one large nut holding the wheel to the hub.

In the US alone, almost 2400 Porsche models have been recalled due to the fault, while there is yet to be a figure announced for other markets.

Owners of affected Porsches in Australia will be contacted to arrange with their nearest authorised Official Porsche Centre to have the work carried out, free of charge.
