# Could this be the last V8-powered highway patrol car put into service?

Chevrolet wrapped up production of the Camaro as we know it in December 2023, but that hasn’t stopped one example of the coupe being called up to serve for a US police force.

This week, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced it has added a 2023 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE to its fleet, becoming the last Camaro to become a part of the CHP, and potentially one of the final V8s to join a highway patrol fleet in the US.

“While we deploy different vehicle platforms across the state, every unit shares the same core mission: protecting the people of California and keeping our roadways safe,” the CHP said in its announcement.

Powered by a 6.2-litre ‘LT1’ V8 engine, the Camaro SS produces 335kW and 617Nm, which in this example is reportedly sent to the rear wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission, rather than the available six-speed manual.

Though it might be the final Camaro coupe added to a US highway patrol fleet, the Camaro nameplate’s potential resurrection means we may see the badge in service once again.

[As previously reported](https://torquecafe.com/chevrolet-camaro-return-delayed-sedan-move-firms-report/), the Camaro is expected to return for the 2029 model year in the US as a four-door model, rather than a two-door coupe and convertible as it has been throughout the bulk of its production run.

It’s been rumoured to continue with V8 power and a choice of automatic or manual transmissions, giving it a point of difference over the Dodge Charger sedan, which can be had as an EV or a twin-turbo straight-six with all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission.
