# John Mayer's Land Rover Defender inspires new guitars

There’s a big crossover between car and music lovers, and that particular Venn diagram seems to have overlapped with John Mayer, who has led an unlikely collaboration between his guitar suppliers PRS and Land Rover.

Mayer – whose 25-year career has spawned hits such as ‘New Light’, ‘Waiting on the World to Change’ and ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’ – has owned a classic Land Rover Defender in Arles Blue for almost two decades, and decided he wanted the colour combination to be reflected on his guitars.

With Land Rover’s Defender sub-brand and PRS Guitars on-board, the two firms have released a lineup of eight PRS Silver Sky guitars, finished in colours either previously or currently available on the Defender 4x4.

“Teaming up with Defender to offer the Silver Sky guitar in their legendary 4x4 colors is a dream come true,” said Mayer.

“I’ve always chosen colorways based on objects and materials that inspire me in the world, and as a collector and lover of Defenders, this collaboration is the perfect crossover between two great passions of mine.”

The collection of guitars will be split into two sets of four: the Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition and the SE Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition.

In the case of the Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition, there will be just 500 examples of each of the four classic colours made in the US, with the Arles Blue, Willow Green, Portofino Red and Sandglow Yellow finishes contrasted against white pickguards and control knobs.

Every example will feature a Defender and Mayer-branded neck plate with the build number out of 500.

For the SE Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition, the pickguards and control knobs will be painted black (the first time this has been available on the Silver Sky), and teamed with either Petra Copper, Sedona Red, Carpathian Grey, or Woolstone Green paintwork from the current Defender. 

The SE Silver Sky is built in Indonesia and will only be available to order until mid-2027, though production numbers won’t be capped.

In addition to these guitars, PRS says it’ll “produce a small run of Silver Sky Defender Limited Editions in classic British Racing Green”. 

“Not available for purchase, these will be used as part of fundraising efforts for both the Defender Service Awards and John Mayer’s charity focused on veterans’ health, The Heart and Armor Foundation.”

Mayer's most recent album, 'Sob Rock', was released in July 2021, featuring the musician holding a PRS Silver Sky on its cover.
