# Next McLaren supercar to out-punch V8s

McLaren has reportedly previewed its next-gen product roadmap to dealers, and it’s no longer going to focus its attention on V8s for its core products.

Since the launch of the MP4-12C in 2011, which became the first model under McLaren’s road car rebirth, the main lineup of the brand’s supercars have been powered by a twin-turbo V8 engine.

This V8 has since powered the 650S, 720S and 750S (the latter pair growing from 3.8 to 4.0 litres) as well as limited-edition models based on them, plus the once-flagship P1, though its time in the spotlight is coming to an end.

According to [*Automotive News*](https://www.autonews.com/news/an-mclaren-reveals-new-brand-identity-product-roadmap-0910/?ref=torquecafe.com), McLaren dealers were shown a roadmap of future product plans, which included the announcement of the company’s new line of supercars, powered by V6 plug-in hybrid powertrains.

McLaren Artura engine

Said to be a newly developed powertrain, it’s not yet known whether it’ll use any carry-over parts from the Artura sports car, which features a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 (with a 120-degree bank) and an electric motor within its transmission.

The report claims the new V6 PHEV supercar will produce about 604kW and 1085Nm, significantly more than the 552kW and 800Nm outputs of the 750S, and still more than the 580kW figure of the recent send-off 788HS).

It would also be a very healthy increase over the Artura, which develops 500kW and 720Nm combined.

Carmakers downsizing the cylinder count of their supercars is nothing new, with Ferrari’s entry-level models moving from V8s to plug-in hybrid V6s in the past few years, while Lamborghini ditched its V10s for hybrid V8s.

The recent [McLaren 788HS](https://torquecafe.com/mclaren-farewells-its-v8-supercar-with-final-special-edition/) is understood to be the last non-electrified V8 in the core McLaren lineup we’ll see for a while, as the brand’s next-generation models are tipped to get hybrid assistance.

Last year, McLaren W1 Project Manager Heather Fitch told *Torquecafe* that the flagship hypercar's new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and hybrid system could be used in future models, though without detailing what cars.

“We’ve previously confirmed that the new V8 will certainly be looked to be powering some of our future vehicles” Fitch told Torquecafe. 

"And hybrids as well, we see a continued role for hybrid system setups for years to come. So there will be opportunities into the future for components like this."
