The Mazda MX-5 was born out of a desire to improve on what the world once loved in British sports cars, but who would’ve thought it’d do a good job of bringing back an American icon to life.

Japanese car modification firm Mitsuoka – best known for the Viewt – is getting ready to release the ‘LA1, which takes a lot of inspiration from the C1 Chevrolet Corvette, except with very modern underpinnings.

Based on the current ND Mazda MX-5, the popular roadster’s A-pillar is visible, providing a hint at what’s under the Corvette-inspired body.

Borrowing the design of the 1958-60 Corvette – with its twin front headlights and single tail lights – the Mitsuoka LA1 leaves little of the MX-5 behind, with its chrome-heavy exterior, five-spoke wheels and copious air vents enough to look like the real thing, at least from a distance.

No details have been shared yet on what is underneath, though it is expected modifications will be minimal, likely meaning the MX-5’s four-cylinder engine is untouched.

Mitsuoka is due to release more information on the LA1 in late November, where it’ll announce specifications, equipment and pricing.
