# Nissan Z Kaze concept resurrects tuner culture, brings back T-tops

Japanese car giant Nissan has already said it’s leaning on some of its legendary nameplates to regenerate interest in the company, but no one could’ve expected it to go full 1990s.

Revealed at this year’s ZCON in the US – run by the Z Car Club Association – Nissan took the covers off its Z Kaze concept, designed to invoke a feeling of warm nostalgia for the brand’s past.

While the original trio of Nissan’s Z cars (the 240Z, 260Z and 280Z) were all coupes, the 280ZX of the late 1970s was the first to introduce ‘T-tops’ to the range, which continued through to the Z31 and Z32-gen 300ZXs.

Ever since the launch of the 350Z, the Z family has not offered a T-top roof, but the new Z Kaze concept proves it’s possible on the current Z34-gen sports car.

Custom engineered to work with the normally fixed-roof Z, the T-top roof panels can be removed to let the wind (or Kaze in Japanese) flow through the cabin, with Nissan’s team using a drive along California's Pacific Coast Highway as its inspiration for the project.

Rather than stop there, Nissan leaned further into the 1990s tuner culture which welcomed the 300ZX back in the day, repainting the Z in a new Pacific Teal finish, complemented by black bodywork extensions, such as its front splitter, ducktail wing and wide wheel-arches.

The pumped-out guards serve a purpose, allowing the 18-inch Nismo LMGT2 wheels to fit, after the rims were restored and rebuilt for the Z Kaze specifically, now measuring 10 inches wide at the front and 11 inches wide in the rear.

Attention has been paid to the interior too, where the upholstery is now a white leather, contrasting with the carbon-fibre interior accent trim.

Its vented carbon-fibre bonnet also alludes to changes to the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 engine, which has been fitted with a GReddy Supreme SP exhaust system, larger front-mount intercooler and a bigger air filter.

Sadly it seems Nissan has no intentions of putting a T-top Z into production, with the Z Kaze to remain a one-off concept for now.
