DeLorean, the car brand behind the infamous DMC-12 which starred in ‘Back to the Future’, is making an unexpected return back to public life, announcing it’ll be racing flying cars from later this year.

The current owners of the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) name confirmed this week its entry into the Airspeeder International Series, a racing competition for electric flying cars, where it’ll be the constructor for the United States Airspeeder team.

Set to make its debut in the 2026-27 season next month, DeLorean is yet to reveal its aircraft’s design, pilot line-up and sporting program, though it’s been confirmed that the vehicle itself will be the Airspeeder Mk3C for its debut season.

It’s the latest venture for the DeLorean brand, which was founded by John DeLorean in 1973, and produced its famous car in Belfast, Northern Ireland, from 1981 until it declared bankruptcy in 1982, amid the company’s founder being charged with drug trafficking by the US Government.

The DeLorean DMC-12 was made famous in Back to the Future

Texas-based UK businessman Stephen Wynne purchased its remaining stock in 1997, with the brand latterly finding itself in the headlines for unrelated reasons.

In 2022, Wynne filed a lawsuit against NBCUniversal – the parent company of Universal Pictures, which owns the rights to ‘Back to the Future’ – claiming DMC had a right to five per cent of the film franchise’s merchandising and commercial revenue. This was later settled in 2024.

Earlier in 2022, the DeLorean Motor Company revealed the Alpha5, an electric vehicle which it planned to make in Humble, Texas, leaning on design cues from the DMC-12 but with a modern twist.

The company’s DeLorean Motors Reimagined division later closed its HQ in San Antonio in 2024, and was later taken to court by ItalDesign for failed payment over its work.
