Ford Australia has reached the 10th anniversary of closing its final production line, with a decade passing since the Broadmeadows Assembly Plant came to an end on October 7, 2016.

The first of the ‘Big Three’ local brands to shut its production lines – with Toyota’s Altona plant and Holden’s Elizabeth factory reaching their conclusion a year later – Ford’s Broadmeadows closure brought an end to its 91-year history of building cars in Australia.

Ford’s announcement of its plans to end Australian vehicle production was made in May 2013, which still gave the brand enough time to launch the final iteration of the Falcon in the FG X in 2014, giving it one of the shortest runs of any of the model’s generations.

The Blue Oval brand’s Australian operations were founded in 1925, though you can go back to 1909 to find when the first Fords were imported locally. It didn’t take long for local production to start, with the first Model T being built in Australia later in 1925.

In the years until the Falcon’s arrival, Ford Australia produced the world’s first Ute in 1934, revolutionising what the modern new-car market looks like.

The Broadmeadows Assembly Plant in Campbellfield, Melbourne was opened in 1959 to build the first generation of locally made Falcons, with the XK Falcon going on sale in 1960.

Last year, *Torquecafe* was given the chance to [ride in the first XK](https://torquecafe.com/we-ride-in-fords-most-important-car-at-bathurst/) made in Australia, which you can view below.

Most Ford Falcons made in Australia went down the line at Broadmeadows, with more than three million examples of the sedan, coupe, wagon and ute produced from June 28, 1960.

In addition to the Falcon, the plant also made Falcon-derivative models, such as the Fairlane and LTD long-wheelbase luxury variants, as well as the revolutionary Territory, which was the only SUV ever made in Australia.

The Ford Cortina and the convertible Capri (based on the underpinnings of the Sydney-built Laser and Mazda 323) were also briefly made at Broadmeadows.

Ford also operated plants in Homebush, Sydney (building the Laser among other vehicles) until 1994, as well as Eagle Farm, Brisbane (where the Falcon, Fairlane and LTD were built for periods) until 1999.

After building its first car in June 1960, the Broadmeadows plant ended production on October 7, 2016, with a Falcon FG X XR6 sedan, finished in Kinetic Blue, becoming the 4,356,628th vehicle to roll off the production line.

Since then, Ford has remained in Australia, with its local engineering and design team leading the global development of the T6 platform which underpins the Ranger ute and Everest SUV, the former of which has been the best-selling vehicle locally since 2023.

While it still operates out of the campus where the Broadmeadows plant was located, the former production site was demolished, and is now being planned to be used as the [location of a data centre](https://torquecafe.com/ford-news-australia-falcon-broadmeadows-ai-data-centre/).

The Barry Road site - technically located in Campbellfield, north of Melbourne - is set to be developed into a data centre by Singaporean firm Zerra DC, which has already filed for approval with the Victorian Government.

Documents lodged by Zerra DC in April show the site, located on 300-340 Barry Road, will be home to a “substantial 6-building Data Centre (nested within ‘Utility Installation’) campus and precinct, with ancillary ‘Office’ space”, if approved.
