Ram’s reintroduction of the V8 engine to its 1500 lineup has proven a success in the US, driving profits and bringing customers back to the brand who didn’t want to opt for its more advanced but less characterful straight-six twin-turbo engines.

From first bringing back the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 in its core products, next is the Ram 1500 TRX SRT with its 6.2-litre supercharged ‘Hellcat’ V8, becoming the pickup power king with 579kW and 922Nm.

Set to come back to Australia in the first quarter of 2027, the 1500 TRX SRT will represent the first of the model line to reintroduce the V8, but Ram might not be able to match local demand with supply due to its popularity in the US.

“The response from customers has blown us away,” said Ram Trucks Australia general manager, Jeff Barber.

“Customer orders have exceeded our expectations, and we will struggle to meet demand for a while. We expect first arrivals and first deliveries (of the 1500 TRX SRT) in Q1 of next year.

“We have a limited number of TRXs coming out of the factory this year, but we are working around the clock to try to secure more allocation.

“The challenge for us is that demand for TRXs is off the charts in the US. But rest assured, our friends at Ram Trucks USA are very aware of the demand here for that vehicle.”

Amy Augustine, head of Ram International product and sales, added the brand is working on making sure markets get their “fair share” of the TRX SRT, with Australia expected to be the highest-volume right-hand drive market for the pickup.

“We brought it back and it's very popular and we're working into getting as much allocation as everybody wants,” Augustine said.

“And so even with the popularity in the United States, we still feel as though we're working on everybody getting their fair share. And so we're constantly working on that and making sure that everyone can get that product.”

Almost 1000 examples of the previous 1500 TRX were sold across Australia and New Zealand, with prices finishing up at $224,950 plus on-road costs for the ‘standard’ TRX, while the send-off Final Edition had a $249,950 price tag.

For its return, Ram has confirmed the 1500 TRX SRT will be priced from $259,950 before on-roads, making it the brand’s most expensive model ever sold locally.

Like the rest of the Ram Trucks Australia range, it’ll be converted from left- to right-hand drive at a facility owned by Walkinshaw in Melbourne.
