The news spilled out of a Ford dealer convention in Las Vegas where CEO Jim Farley is said to have unveiled two key models – an entry-level SUV and a Mustang sedan.

The report came from trade outlet Automotive News, to which sources likened the four-door Mustang to the Porsche Panamera in regard to styling.

Dealers were told that pricing for the Mustang sedan would start at under US$40,000, or $56,500 in Australian currency, while no timeline for the launch of the car was revealed.

The Mach-4 nameplate has long been linked to a production four-door Mustang, although that too was not confirmed at the conference.

The Mustang in its traditional form has only ever been sold as a coupe, although it does use the Mustang nameplate for the five-door electric crossover Mach-E.

The other announcement from the Automotive News report was of a new entry-level SUV to replace the now out-of-production Escape in the US.

What platform it would be built on is unclear, however a 'boxy and wide' design was part of the report, as was a starting price of just US$25,000 (AUD$35,300) and options of both petrol and hybrid powertrains.
