BYD’s highly anticipated new ute has seemingly been accidentally revealed to the world ahead of its official launch. The new challenger to the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger was spotted on the streets in Mexico City, with local outlet AutoDinamico, capturing footage of it without any camouflage whatsoever.

The undisguised ute, rumoured to be called the Shark in keeping with the brand’s marine animal theme, is clearly taking direct aim at the market leading Toyota and Ford. It features a bold, angular look, which should play well with customers who prefer the ‘tough truck’ image. Although, it’s worth noting that if this vehicle was being used for filming, as is likely, it will be the highest trim grade, which explains the alloy wheels and sports bay. It’s not clear yet if BYD in Australia will chase the workhorse end of the market or simply focus on the upper tier, chasing the likes of the HiLux Rogue, Ranger Wildtrak and Nissan Navara PRO-4X.

The Chinese brand has been preparing this ute for sometime, with local distributor EV Direct reportedly working closely with head office to ensure this new model meets the demands of Australian ute buyers. EV Direct has said it has even brought in former Holden and Ford engineers to help the project.

While nothing has been officially confirmed, it’s expected the new ute will be powered by BYD’s ‘dual motor intelligence’ (DM-i) powertrain initially, with an all-electric version to follow at least 12 months later. DM-i is a “super hybrid”, according to the company, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric motors for both potential zero-emissions driving and long-range capability.

The BYD isn’t the only new ute coming to shake up the market. Kia recently revealed the name of its long-awaited entry into the segment, confirming the long-expected Tasman nameplate. Hyundai will also join with an all-electric ute by the end of the decade and American EV brand Rivian has long teased an expansion to Australia.

The new ute is expected to be launched in Australia by the end of 2024, alongside a new large SUV with the same DM-i powertrain. It joins an expanding range that includes the Dolphin, Seal and Atto 3 electric models.
