The first official example of the all-new Ford Mustang Dark Horse, build number 001, has sold for a staggering price of US$375,000 ($567,000).
Going under the hammer at this week’s Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, the proceeds from the sale are going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The Dark Horse is a new addition to the Mustang range, a new limited edition nameplate that effectively replaces the Mach 1 and sits above the V8-powered GT. It too is powered by the 5.0-litre V8 ‘Coyote’ engine, which pumps out 372kW of power and 566Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a Tremec six-speed manual gearbox which is capable of ‘flat-shifting’ (you can change gears without lifting off the accelerator), it gets a unique suspension tune compared to the GT and some unique styling touches.

The particular car that sold this week, VIN #001, had a number of optional extras, including Recaro seats, painted hood and accent stripes as well as both the ‘Handling’ and ‘Appearance’ packages.
Only 1000 examples of the Dark Horse will be available to Australian customers, when it goes on sale in the second quarter of the year. The good news is it will be priced from $99,102 (plus on-road costs), making it much more affordable than this first model.
