Kia’s ambitions to become a major player in the new world of electric vehicles has taken a step to the next level with the unveiling of the all-new EV6 GT.
The flagship model of the new EV6 range, the EV6 GT is powered by a pair of electric motors that make an impressive 430kW of power and 740Nm of torque. Kia claims it will complete the 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.5 seconds – and to prove it the company put it up against some very big name competition.

As part of the online launch of the new model, Kia featured a video of the new EV6 GT in a 400m drag race against a Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes-AMG GT, McLaren 570S, Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Ferrari California T (check it out below). While there are faster models across most of those brands, it was still an impressive sight to see the Kia crossover beat all of its more prestige rivals off the mark – and be beaten at the finish line by only the McLaren.
“The GT version of EV6 demonstrates our technological leadership through its combination of outstanding high-speed charging and acceleration performance like a super sports car,” claimed aid Albert Biermann, President and Head of R&D Division for Hyundai Motor Group, the former BMW M boss and the man responsible for all of Hyundai and Kia performance cars. “With our dedicated EV platform, there is no need for compromise between inspiring spaciousness and performance.”
The GT is the top of the new EV6 range, but there will be a variety to choose from thanks to its new ‘E-GMP’ underpinnings that it shares with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. There will be both all- and rear-wheel drive options available as well as two different battery packs, that will give buyers a choice between price and range depending on their needs.
The standard rear-wheel drive EV6 will get a 125kW electric motor and a 58kWh battery, but you’ll be able to step up to a 168kW RWD version with the 77.4kWh battery. The all-wheel drive non-GT variants will get a 239kW/605Nm dual motor set-up with the long-range battery – which is still impressive performance for a crossover this size.
All models are equipped with ultra-fast charging thanks to its 800-volt electrical system, which means it can add 100km of range every four and half minutes.
Final details aren’t confirmed yet but it’s believed the EV6 will hit Kia Australia showrooms by the end of this year, or early in 2022, with pricing to be confirmed closer to that date.
