Still think electric cars are only for the city? Well, Mark Webber and Porsche have some news for you, because the German brand’s all-electric Taycan 4S Cross Turismo has just completed an epic road trip from Darwin to Sydney.
Former Formula 1 ace Webber began Porsche’s expedition that took 19 days and wound its way across some stunning scenery and to some iconic venues, including the ‘Big Red’ sand dune in the Simpson Desert and Mount Panorama, Bathurst. It was appropriate that Webber drove the Taycan Cross Turismo across the outback, as he said during the development of the car that it would be ideally suited for the vastness of Australia.

Along the way the wagon took in the Nitmiluk National Park, remote Daly Waters before finishing at Sydney’s Bondi Beach; another iconic Australian location.
In between the Taycan Cross Turismo required 27 recharging stops totalling 85 hours, but most of those were able to be done overnight. Porsche equipped the Taycan with the optional 22kW on-board charger, which allowed it to draw power to the batteries from a variety of sources, including cattle stations and specialized fast chargers.
Porsche Australia CEO, Daniel Schmollinger, said Webber was the ideal candidate to begin the trip, given his long-standing connection to the brand – both on and off the track.
“There’s no one better to experience the Taycan with than Mark Webber,” Schmollinger said. “He understands the performance capabilities of this car and has a deep respect for how Porsche is pushing the boundaries of electric mobility. Mark’s passion for both cutting-edge technology and Australia made him the perfect guide.”
