Looking for a big, tough American pickup but the Ram 1500 is just too small? Well, Ram has the answer, because the all-new 2500 has just arrived in Australia.
This is one of the biggest utes offered in this country, with a braked towing capacity of up to a whopping 8000kg, which should appeal to race teams looking for a vehicle that can tow your trailer to the track with ease.
The key to the new Ram’s towing prowess is hidden under the freshly-shaped aluminum bonnet, a Cummins 6.7-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel engine making 276kW of power and a massive 1152Nm of torque. It’s paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and a BorgWarner electronic transfer case for 2WD, 2WD High, Neutral and 4WD Low options.

It sits within an all-new frame chassis that’s built with 98.5 per cent high-strength steel for maximum strength without adding unnecessary weight.
Like the 1500, the Ram 2500 will be converted to right-hand drive in Australia. It has been developed specifically for the Australian market by Ram Trucks Australia, a division of automotive importer Ateco Group; which also looks after Maserati, Renault and LDV locally.
According to the company, the converted 2500 has been put through an arduous homologation process that included 50,000 hours of pre-build development hours and 50,000km of real-world road driving.
Like the 1500 it’s also available with the American brand’s unique RamBox system that integrates a lockable storage box into the ute’s tray.

It’s not just strong too, the 2500 comes equipped with plenty of luxuries and modern conveniences, including Uconnect smartphone pairing and navigation on a 12-inch central touchscreen as well as a seven-inch display in the instrument cluster.
Ram Australia is offering two options, the 2500 Laramie Crew Cab from $157,950 or you can get the 2500 Laramie Crew Cab RamBox from $162,900 (both prices exclude on-road costs).
But wait, there’s more. Ram Trucks Australia national manager Jeff Barber has confirmed that the 2500 will be joined by the even larger 3500 by the end of the year.
“All-new 2500 starts the roll-out of our next generation Heavy Duty trucks,” Barber explained.
“Built for serious assignments, the all-new 2500 – which will be joined soon by the next-gen 3500 – sets new benchmarks in performance, capability, technology and luxury.”
The Ram isn’t the only big US ute in Australia, General Motors Specialty Vehicles recently confirmed it will introduce the Chevrolet 2500 Heavy-Duty in November.
