One of just five World Rally Championship-inspired Subarus is set for auction later this week and could sell for up to $500,000.
The Subaru Impreza WRX STI 22B is one of the rarest creations from the company, a special two-door version developed during its successful run in the WRC in the mid-1990s. The company only built 425 globally and just five examples arrived in Australia – and this is one of them.
Set for sale by Collecting Cars Australia, this Japanese market version is expected to attract big money bids. The last example to sell via Collecting Cars went for $360,000 and other examples overseas have fetched up to $416,000.
The 22B was built as a homologation special, giving Subaru’s then star driver Colin McRae a more compact model than the usual four-door Impreza. All 22B were powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder boxer engine making 206kW of power and 363Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. In addition to its two-door body it also got pumped out guards filled with 17-inch BBS alloy wheels.
All 22B were originally finished in the same blue paintwork with gold wheels that the WRC entries competed in.
This example up for sale is car number 258 and has a reported 71,000km on the odometer and comes with documentation to verify its condition. The online auction will take place this Friday (June 9).
