Will Porsche add a 718 Targa?

Porsche has just unveiled its latest generation 911 Targa

Porsche could expand its unique Targa bodystyle to its smaller 718 range – alongside the Boxtser and Cayman.

Speaking about the launch of the latest generation 911 Targa, Frank-Steffan Walliser, the name in charge of developing the 911 and 718 line-ups, believes the Targa style of partially open roof that fills a niche between the coupe and Cabriolet is a success story for the brand.

“The Targa is so unique in the world of the automobile, no other car has an open version like this, especially the interpretation of the automatic roof,” Walliser said. “So besides the Cabriolet we have another, design-wise really interesting and cool car, and this has really established a third bodystyle. It combines perfectly the new look of a Porsche with a touch of heritage. We know Porsche customers, especially 911 customers, love the heritage.”

Walliser was later asked if he could envisage expanding the Targa concept to other models in the range, he admitted it could work for the 718 model; and laughed off any possibility of a Targa version of the Macan or Cayenne.

“718? Yes, [it] would work,” he said. “SUV? Maybe a little bit too much stretched, the nameplate. As always within Porsche the content and name tag should fit together – don’t blame me for the Taycan Turbo – but as a general line, it should fit.”

The current generation 718 was launched in 2016, so is likely to be replaced by an all-new model in 2022. In the same interview Walliser revealed the company is looking at some radical changes for the next-gen 718 which could include a return to six-cylinder engines, but more likely a switch to an electric powertrain.

Walliser said the company needs to look at new powertrain options for the 718 Boxster and Cayman because new European emissions regulations that will come into effect in 2026 will require much more efficient engines, or the switch to battery power.

“The next generation of 718 will be on the market in 2026,” Walliser explained. “So we have to consider [a new engine]… Six cylinders… or something way more different. Electric is one of those options.”
