- Description: Brabus decided taking the back off a Mercedes-AMG G-Wagen wasn’t enough, and has given the already fast car a healthy dose of power.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 isn’t known for being subtle, so it should be no surprise that famed tuners Brabus have only made the G-Wagen stand out even more.

Unveiled this week, the Brabus P900 Rocket Edition is an SUV that's converted into a ute, and with all the firepower of a supercar under the bonnet.

What started life as an AMG G63, the dual-row cabin has been retained but with the rear roof not cut away to create a ute/pickup, complete with soft-teak decking and red Brabus lettering, as well as a pair of lockable, waterproof cargo boxes.

The fitment of the cargo bed to the rear of the G-Class has resulted in its wheelbase being extended by 50cm, though Brabus claims that the ladder-frame chassis’ torsional rigidity is fully preserved.

The coachbuilt body also features the brand’s distinctive Rocket Edition Widestar widebody kit, consisting of exposed carbon-fibre wheel arch flares, additional aero elements, unique front and rear bumpers, as well as under-body protection.

Sitting under those wider wheel arches are 24-inch Brabus Monoblock II Evo wheels, with the three-spoke rims measuring 10 inches wide at the front, and 12 inches at the rear, shod in bespoke Hankook Ventus tyres.

Despite their dilated diameter, Brabus aims to keep the P900 riding nicely on its ‘RideControl’ aluminium coilover suspension, which lowers the car by 45mm compared to the base G63, while offering adaptive damping, controlled by the driver.

The interior of the P900 Rocket Edition is somehow even less understated than the outside, with its soft black leather and Alcantara in black contrasting against the red stitching and pipework.

Of course, because it is a Brabus, there’s copious amounts of high-gloss carbon-fibre trim throughout the cabin too, such as on the door handle inserts and paddle shifters..

To make it easier for occupants to get in the rear, the back doors can open at up to 90 degrees, while second-row passengers also get their own instrument console which can display vehicle speed, engine rpm, outside temperature, G-forces, time and date.

This being a Brabus, the engine has also been turned up so the bite can match the bark.

While the G63 AMG has a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, Brabus has bored it out to 4.5-litres, fitted new pistons, a revised billet crankshaft for a larger stroke, and equipped the engine with two new turbochargers, featuring larger compressor units.

As a result, outputs have climbed from the standard 4.0-litre engine’s respectable 430kW and 850Nm to 662kW and 1250Nm, representing increases of 54 per cent and 47 per cent, respectively.

However, Brabus says torque has been limited to 1050Nm “to protect the drivetrain components”.

Still, it has a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.7 seconds, while being able to reach an electronically limited top speed of 240km/h, despite now being fitted with a 300km/h speedometer.

Crucially, it retains the G63’s side-exit exhaust pipes, now finished in an exposed-carbon surround incorporating a red Rocket Launch Ambience Light.

Brabus P900 Rocket Edition

Just 10 examples of the Brabus P900 Rocket Edition will be made, though its figures aren’t enough for it to claim the title as the world’s fastest ute.

That title currently belongs to the [Ram 1500 Rumble Bee SRT](https://torquecafe.com/ram-news-1500-rumble-bee-worlds-fastest-pickup-ute-australia/), which can accelerate from 0-62mph (97km/h) in just 3.4 seconds, complete a quarter-mile (402m) pass in 11.6 seconds, and reach a top speed of 274km/h.

That latter figure, if it is tested and verified, would make it the world’s fastest production pickup and ute, beating the record held by the 255kW HSV Maloo, set in 2001 with an average two-way speed of 271.44km/h, set by Mark Skaife.
