Can-Am has built an off-road racing-inspired side-by-side that’s ready to take on the desert or sand dunes straight from the showroom. The all-new Maverick R is the brand’s most extreme performance offering yet, packing a 179kW turbocharged engine, dual-clutch transmission and purpose-built suspension.
“Can-Am believes that progress does not come from standing still, and the exciting new Maverick R represents our commitment to creating a machine that will change the industry by smashing through the confines of current performance and design boundaries, taking the rider experience to a whole new level,” explained Sandy Scullion, president of the Powersports Group at Can-Am parent company, BRP.
The heart of the Maverick R is the powertrain, which combines a 999cc Rotax turbocharged three-cylinder four-stroke engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This new gearbox, the first off-road DCT for Rotax, is able to be used either as an automatic or manual – via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
This powertrain is housed in a new chassis design, which features high-strength steel tubing for extra strength as well as redesigned mountings for the front and rear suspension. In order to provide better stability for high-speed off-road driving, the Maverick R has a 2743mm long wheelbase and measures 1955mm wide.
The suspension features Fox’s latest Smart-Shox technology which can make more than 200 suspension adjustments per second to ensure the optimum ride. Can-Am claims the Maverick R boasts up to 635mm of front suspension travel, 660mm in the rear and has 430mm of ground clearance. The buggy rides on 16-inch beadlocked wheels fitted with 32-inch Tenacity XNR ITP tyres.
The cabin also features a first for Can-Am, a 10.2-inch touchscreen display that provides better visibility for key function when you’re tearing up off-road, as well as connectivity to your smartphone. There’s also four-way adjustable seats for driver and passenger.
