Porsche has unveiled a new limited edition version of its iconic 911, inspired by its GT3 racing example but freed from any rules or regulations.
The track-only 911 GT3 R Rennsport was unveiled at Laguna Seca, California, as part of the company’s Rennsport Reunion. Taking clear inspiration from both the company’s latest 911 GT3 R GT3-class racing car as well as historic models such as the 935/77 and 962, this is a no rules model for driving enthusiasts.
But only a few enthusiasts, with Porsche only committing to build 77 examples of this wild machine. It’s powered by the same 4.2-litre flat-six from the GT3 R but tuned to make even more power, 455kW at its 9400rpm redline, while running all the way to a top speed of 296km/h.
“The new Porsche 911 GT3 R Rennsport offers the experience of driving a 911-based racing car in what is probably the most primal form,” explained Thomas Luadenbach, vice president of Porsche motorsport. “It gives you goosebumps whenever you look at it and combines the finest motorsport technology with a design language that is typical of Porsche.”
