A new way to ride

Can-Am wants to help you get on three-wheels with its new licence deal.

Can-Am Australia has teamed up with Stay Upright for a specific 3WV course

Want the freedom of riding a motorbike but too afraid about making the leap to two-wheels from four? Well, Can-Am, the maker of the Spyder and Ryker three-wheel vehicles has partnered with motorcycle licencing school, Stay Upright, to help you make the leap.

The partnership has seen the two sides create a specific three-wheel vehicle (3WV) licence as part of a pilot program in conjunction with NSW Transport. So, instead of having to make the leap directly to a two-wheel bike for first-time riders, there is now the option to transition to motorcycles via the Can-Am three-wheel vehicles.

Previously 3WV riders were required to get a motorcycle licence, but with Can-Am finding the majority of its Spyker and Ryder buyers being new to the world of bikes, finding a bridge from four-wheels to two made sense. According to Can-Am’s data, 53 per cent of 3WV owners are new to riding, compared to 36 per cent of two-wheel riders.

Can-Am’s three-wheel range

To make the process even easier and more appealing, if someone completes the course and then buys a 3WV from the brand within three months, Can-Am will refund the cost of the course, provide up to $1250 worth of riding accessories and a free tank of fuel.

Currently only one model in the Can-Am range, the Ryker 600cc, is approved for learner riders who pass the course, but if they want to graduate to something bigger in the future there are multiple models to choose from. These include the Ryker Rally and Sport, both with a 900cc Rotax engine, and the more touring friendly Spyder models with 1330cc three-cylinder engines.

This pilot program is due to run until January 31, 2025, when it is hoped it will roll out across Stay Upright’s locations in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT.
