China’s new Cadillac rival

Geely has launched a new sub-brand called Galaxy to build premium electrified models

Chinese automotive giant, Geely, has revealed plans for an all-new range of electrified range of luxury vehicles that will pit it against the likes of BMW, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz and even Porsche.

The Geely Galaxy range will focus on building “premium long range hybrid and pure electric vehicles” and revealed both its first production car and a stunning new concept. The sub-brand’s first production model is called the Galaxy L7 and it’s a plug-in hybrid SUV, which gives it an immediate rival to the likes of the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q7.

The concept is a sleek and sporty sedan, dubbed the Galaxy Light, which looks like a Porsche Taycan rival.

Geely is planning a rapid expansion though, stating its goal is to bring seven new models to the Chinese market within the next two years. Four of these will be plug-in hybrids, including the L7 and an L6 sedan – which is likely to take its styling cues from the Galaxy Light. The other three will be fully electric and begin with the first arrival in the fourth quarter of 2023. Geely only said this model will be called E8 but gave no details about it.

There’s no official word on if and when Geely would expand the Galaxy range into overseas markets, but the brand is known for its global ambition. It already has a controlling interest in Volvo, Polestar, Lotus and Lynk & Co. so there’s certainly scope for the Galaxy models to lead its global push for the Geely name.
