In 2022, the motorcycle world held its breath in anticipation of the Ducati DesertX, a machine that promised to redefine the adventure biking experience. Now 2023 sees the unveiling of a new breed of DesertX, the DesertX Rally – a thoroughbred adventure beast that’s ready to take on the most rugged terrains the world has to offer. On the other hand it’s also possibly too good looking to take into the scenarios it was built for.
Developed and tested on racetracks it recently took out top honours in the twin-cylinder category in the Iron Road Prologue at the 2023 Erzbergrodeo with five-time Enduro World Champion Antoine Men aboard. Antoine’s efforts resulted in a front row race qualifying time, something never before achieved by a twin at Erzbergrodeo. Shame he didn’t do the full race! Regardless, this is a feat that speaks volumes about the DesertX Rally’s capabilities.
Expect the same engine capacity of 937cc, 110hp, 21-litre tank, six rider modes and same 21-inch front rim and 18-inch rear because why fix what’s not broken. The main upgrades include the Kayaba suspension with increased travel, featuring closed cartridge fork and shock absorber with larger piston. The central-spoked wheels, specifically designed for off-road racing, provide enhanced stability.
The chassis has undergone improvements to tackle the most unforgiving off-road terrains. Enhanced front-end rigidity, thanks to a billet aluminium plate, ensures precision handling, while a high front mudguard keeps debris at bay. The Rally’s rider will also appreciate the new adjustable Öhlins steering damper.
Even though the suspension is larger, the bike longer and overall meaner than the standard DesertX, the Rally is only 1kg heavier.
They’ve taken on Erzbergrodeo Iron Road Prologue, they’ve had a crack at Finke – I’m very much hoping the Dakar Rally in next on the list for Ducati.
The DesertX Rally hits dealers in Australia in the second half of 2024 with a price tag of $36,600 ride-away.
