Meet Ferrari’s new baby

Ferrari has a new Prancing Horse in the yard.

The Italian brand took the wraps off the Ferrari Roma in (where else?) Rome, effectively adding a hard-top version of its Portofino convertible to its stable.

The underpinnings are shared with the Portofino, the same front-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine making 456kW of power and 760Nm of torque (that’s a slight power bump over the convertible). One mechanical difference between the two is the transmission, with the Roma running an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, while the Portofino has a seven-speed gearbox.

Tipping the scales at 1472kg, the Roma is approximately 80kg lighter than the Portofino, which should help make it faster and more dynamic. It’s enough to propel the Roma from 0-100km/h in just 3.4-seconds and to a top speed beyond 320km/h.

But Ferrari hasn’t just added a proper roof, instead the Roma has been completely restyled to create a unique look. Inspired by Ferraris of the 1950s and ‘60s the Roma has a distinctive look compared to anything else currently in the Italian brand’s line-up; specifically the integrated grille and slim-line taillights.

Ferrari said in its statement: “With its distinctive flair and style, the car is a contemporary representation of the carefree, pleasurable way of life that characterised Rome in the 1950s and ‘60s. The Ferrari Roma offers discerning clients the finesse and refinement that brings the concept of ‘la Dolce Vita’ right up to date.”

Ferrari officially calls it a “2+” because it is offering optional small rear seats, or a storage space.
