The VK Group A SS was the hottest of the first generation Commodores, a homologation special built to ensure the Holden Dealer Team’s eligibility to the new Group A regulations of the Australian Touring Car Championship.
By de-stroking the 5.0-litre 308ci engine by a millimetre, capacity fell to 4987cc – permitting the vehicle to race at 1325kg under Group A regulations.

The engine was fettled further to produce 196kW and 418Nm – more than a bit by 1985 standards. Transmission options included a standard four-speed manual gearbox (a five-speed was optional), which sent power to a rear limited slip differential, then two driven rear wheels – 225/50R16 a pop. The former Brock vehicle is a four-speed manual.
Its iconic Formula Blue paintwork earned it the nickname the ‘Blue Meanie’. While build numbers went to 500, 502 were produced.
Bidding is now open at www.collectingcars.com (to which TorqueCafe has no affiliation) – with the listing able to be viewed here. Bidding ends April 11 at 4.30pm AEST.
