The all-new Kia EV6

Kia’s transformation from a cut-price alternative to market-leader is complete. The South Korean brand took the wraps off its first standalone electric vehicle overnight and the car is nothing short of stunning.

Dubbed the EV6, this is Kia’s version of an EV built on the all-new ‘E-GMP’ platform developed by Hyundai-Kia Group, making it the cousin of Hyundai’s own striking new EV, the Ioniq 5. Kia calls its design philosophy for the EV6 ‘Opposites United’ but ignoring all the design-speak and buzzwords, quite simply this is a major step forward for the brand. The sleek lines and modern concepts make the EV6 impossible to ignore, even if you don’t love the look.

The all-new Kia EV6

“EV6, as the first dedicated Kia EV, is a showcase of human-centred, progressive design and electrified power. We strongly believe EV6 is a compelling and relevant model for the new EV market,” explained Karim Habib, head of Kia’s Global Design Centre. “With EV6 we aimed to create a distinctive, impactful design by using a combination of sophisticated, high-tech features on pure and rich volumes, while providing a unique space as a futuristic EV.”

While Kia has given us a good look at the appearance of the EV6, technical details remain under wraps for now. But given it sits on the same platform as the Ioniq 5 expect very similar specifications.

That means a choice of single or dual motor layout, which means either rear- or all-wheel drive, and the choices of two batteries – a 56kWh or 72.6kWh. With dual-motors and the more powerful battery the EV6 should be capable of 225kW of power and 605Nm of torque.

It also should feature the 800-volt electrical system, which allows for ultra-rapid charging meaning on a 350kW charger the battery can be replenished at 100km every five-minutes.

Kia Australia is yet to confirm if and when the EV6 will be offered in Australia, but has said previously that it’s in discussion with head office about introducing EVs to its range.
