Ford reveals its most patriotic car yet

The Ford Mustang GTD has been tweaked for the 250th birthday of the US, receiving a new patriotic-themed livery.

There are a handful of cars which symbolise the excess of the US, and the Ford Mustang GTD is one of them.

From its supercharged V8 engine to its aggressive looks, it already stands as the flagship of Ford’s model lineup – though don’t mention that it’s actually made in Canada.

In preparation for America’s upcoming semiquincentennial, Ford has changed up the already patriotic Mustang GTD ‘Spirit of America’, tweaking its white, red and blue livery for the country’s 250th birthday.

Named after the land speed record-setting jet-powered vehicles driven by Craig Breedlove, the Mustang GTD Spirit of America was first revealed in October, wearing a simple white livery with a red and blue racing stripe over the top.

In its latest form, an asymmetrical livery now adorns the powerful pony car, with a central blue stripe stretching from the front to the rear bumpers, while a thicker blue and red stripe flank it, starting at the bonnet vents and ending on the boot.

All Mustang GTD Spirit of Americas are fitted with the optional Performance Package, adding more aerodynamic parts which have helped the Ford become one of the fastest production cars around the Nürburgring.

The Ford Mustang GTD is powered by a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, producing 600kW and driving the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transaxle.

Underneath the aggressive bodywork is double-wishbone front suspension and pushrod rear suspension, connected to 20-inch wheels with Michelin Cup 2 tyres, and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes.

Ford’s Porsche 911-killer coming to Australia – but there’s a catch
