What do you need when it comes to rubber, that vital piece of black matter that connects you to the ground and does its best to keep you sunny side up? Top things that come to my mind is a tyre that steers nicely, is easy to tip in and that I can comfortably ride from Sydney to Melbourne on. I want to be confident in its grip and stability when accelerating out of turns and I don’t want to feel that squirm on corner exit when the tyre is on its side.
Meet the Michelin Power 6, an improvement on their popular Power 5. Their aim is to provide the full package – grip, style, durability and performance. The key feature is the new asymmetric tread claimed to offer more grip in the wet and dry.
The dry I can confirm that grip is excellent, I haven’t got out there in the wet to spin some wheels so I’ll take their word for it. Michelin claims it has noticeably more grip in the wet than the Power 5, with the new tread also providing better aquaplaning resistance when the going gets slippery.
Michelin also gives a nod to style with a soft velvet touch side wall featuring a motorsport-inspired chequerboard pattern. I’d never really associated tyres with style, rims, yes, but not the rubber, and I enjoy that Michelin has featured this. And the velvet touch side wall actually feels like legit velvet… not that you’ll be down there that much stroking your tyre… Or perhaps you will!
The Power 6 is available in 10 different sizes, across 17-inch rims, so there should be a tyre to fit your ride.
