Jerry Seinfeld likes cars. A lot. He’s also incredibly, surprisingly rich, with a fortune estimated at near a billion US dollars.
That’s led him to collect an estimated 150 cars, including the Porsche 917K driven by Steve McQueen in Le Mans – and the very first Porsche ever to be badged a 911, a car previously owned by Ferry Porsche himself.
A confirmed Porsche tragic, Seinfeld says he owns “a large number of 911s” and at one point, reportedly had 47 Porsches.
On January 20, 1988, Seinfeld purchase his first Porsche 911, a black Carrera. He still has it. He says his most treasured possession is the 1970 Targa Florio-winning Porsche 908/03 chassis number 008.
Seinfeld has so many cars, in 1999 he purchased a multi-storey building in New York City – a former plumbing business – and converted it into a private garage, complete with subterranean, air-conditioned storage for 20 vehicles. He also has a team that specifically looks after his vast car collection.
Seinfeld is said to be so meticulous about his cars, he can watch them in their garage using an app on his phone.
As well as a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, Seinfeld is known to have an old Land Rover Defender on which he taught his daughter how to drive. Seinfeld and wife Jessica nicknamed it the Countess because it was once owned by a countess in Africa.
In 2023, Seinfeld successfully bid A$1.95m for a one-off Porsche 996 911 Classic Club Coupe, and continues shopping for and buying vehicles.
Seinfeld has posted plenty of cars to Instagram and made it look like they’re his. They include a 964 Porsche 911 3.8 RSR, 991.1 Porsche 911 GT3 RS in Liquid Chrome Blue Metallic (“one of one”) and a 959 S, just one of 292 produced.
Not all the cars stick around, however. In 2016, Seinfeld put up for auction 16 rarified Porsches from his personal collection. According to the auctioneers Gooding & Co at the time, they were:
1955 Porsche 550 Spyder
1957 Porsche 356A Speedster
1958 Porsche 356A 1500 GS/GT Carrera Speedster
1958 Porsche 597 Jagdwagen
1959 Porsche 718RSK
1963 Porsche 356B 2000 GS Carrera 2 Coupe
1966 Porsche 911
1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder
1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 IROC RSR
1989 Porsche 911 Speedster
1990 Porsche 962C
1994 Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 S Flachbau
1997 Porsche 993 3.8 Cup RSR
2000 Porsche Carrera GT Prototype
2011 Porsche 997 Speedster
2012 Porsche 997 GT3 4.0 Cup “Brumos Commemorative Edition”
Seinfeld also auctioned a 1960 Volkswagen Beetle and 1964 Volkswagen Camper. All the vehicles sold except for the Carrera GT prototype, Seinfeld raking in almost A$30m from the auction.
Curiously, in 2019 the firm that purchased the ultra-rare 356A 1500 GS/GT Carrera Speedster sued Seinfeld claiming the car was counterfeit. Seinfeld in turn sued European Collectibles who he originally purchased the car from. Both cases were settled in 2022.
