Gordon Murray, the legendary designer behind Formula 1 championship winners and the McLaren F1 hypercar, has released video footage of the remarkable engine that will power his all-new T.50 supercar.

In the short clip you can watch HERE, the 3.9-litre V12 built by racing specialists, Cosworth can be heard for the first time. The engine in the clip is a three-cylinder test mule but it’s capable of revving to the same redline as the V12 will – a ear-piercing 12,100rpm.

Read more about the Murray T.50 here.

Murray is a vocal proponent for naturally-aspirated engines (having carefully selected a BMW-built V12 for the McLaren F1) and believes turbocharging and hybrids adds unnecessary complexity to supercars. To that end he worked with Cosworth, who he was familiar with from his days designing Brabham F1 winners, to create this bespoke V12 for his T.50.

Gordon Murray Automotive T.50.

It will produce 485kW of power and 450Nm of torque which is well short of the likes of the Aston Martin Valkyrie and Mercedes-AMG One (both boast 746kW), but with the T.50 weighing only 980kg it will have a similar power-to-weight ratio – 487kW/tonne. Murray claims the engine will be the highest revving, highest power density, lightest and fastest-responding naturally-aspirated V12 built for the road.

The T.50 will also have one of the most advanced aerodynamic packages of any road car, with Murray working with the Racing Point F1 squad to fine-tune the car. It will include a downforce-inducing fan at the rear, like his famous Brabham BT46B F1 machine from 1978.

All this hi-tech, bespoke technology won’t come cheap, the T.50 will have a $3.8m asking price for the 100 examples Murray plans to build in the UK.
