Is the new Lexus GR sports car going to be V8 powered?
It certainly sounds like it based on this video of the new GT3 racing version testing at Spa-Francorchamps. As we’ve previously reported, the new sports car is based on the Toyota GR GT3 concept first revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2022 and is expected to form the basis of a new Lexus sports car, which will replace both the RC and LC models.
Neither Toyota nor Lexus have revealed any details about the car officialy, including what will power it. Judging by the audio on this video it appears the racing version will continue to use the 5.0-litre V8 found in the company’s current RC GT3 entry. That doesn’t mean that’s what the road car will use, with GT3 regulations allowing car makers freedom to use different engines in the racing version than the road car it’s based on.
Previous reports indcate the production version of this new hero model will feature be motivated by either a 3.5-litre V6 with hybrid assistance or possibly use the newer 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine developed for the US Tundra and Tacoma pickups.
Originally believed to be scheduled for a 2025 arrival, Lexus has reportedly pushed the launch of both the road and racing version of this new sports car to 2026.
