Holden may be gone, but Chevrolet looks to have a healthy future in Australia.

Holden Special Vehicles today confirmed that the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pick-up will go on sale in Australia in March. It joins its bigger siblings, the Silverado 2500 and 3500, as well as the Chevrolet Camaro sports coupe in an expanding HSV line-up.

Since the end of local manufacturing by Holden, HSV has reinvented itself by converting left-hand drive vehicles for the local market. That has led to speculation that General Motors’ plans for a niche GM Specialty Vehicles operation in Australia is likely to be in partnership with HSV.

For now, the Silverado 1500 should give HSV a boost with the similar-sized Ram 1500 ute (which is converted at the same Melbourne facility for a separate importer) a proven sales hit down under.

Pricing is yet to be revealed but HSV has confirmed the Silverado 1500 will be powered by a 6.2-litre V8 petrol engine, making 313kW of power and 624Nm of torque. It will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive system, with a two-speed transfer case.

Its braked towing capacity is rated up to 4500kg (750kg unbraked) but its maximum payload in the tray is only 712kg.
