The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

When a great car comes to the end of its life-cycle it’s a sad occasion – but often there’s some good news too. That’s because car companies love to send out their popular models with a final flourish – like the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

The German brand’s flagship coupe is closer to the end of its life than the beginning, having launched back in 2015, so the brand has created its wildest version yet. The Black Series nameplate is reserved for AMG’s fastest and most track-capable variants, and this latest addition looks set to live up to that billing.

It’s due to be unveiled in detail in the near future, but the brand teased it in a short video recently, giving us a glimpse of what to expect.

Track ready

Having already produced the AMG GT R Pro – a more powerful, lighter and more track-focused version of the coupe – AMG needed to push the boundaries even further to ensure the Black Series is truly special enough. So, the bodywork and aerodynamic package has been completely overhauled for better handling and improved cooling.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

As seen from the teaser video and spy shots of the car, the GT Black Series gets a new front splitter with aero flicks, vented hood and front fenders, new side skirts, huge rear diffuser and massive rear wing.

It seems Mercedes has taken elements from both the GT3 and GT4 versions of the car but then gone a step further. For example, the rear wing is a lot bigger than any racing version with a huge upper element as well as a lower plane that also seems to offer structural support.

The diffuser is also a lot bigger and more aggressive than the GT R Pro and more in line with what you’d expect to see on a GT with numbers and sponsors on the sides.

Power boost

Naturally for a brand synonymous for its outrageous engines, the Black Series will get a more potent heart to go with its new body.

The GT’s awesome 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is set to continue but – to borrow a line from Spinal Tap – everything turned up to 11. The soundtrack from the teaser video appears to lend credence to reports from Europe that the AMG engineers have redesigned the engine with new cylinder heads and a flat-plane crankshaft.

That should help take outputs north of the 430kW of power and 700Nm of torque offered by the AMG GT Pro. It’s tipped the Black Series will be packing more than 500kW and 800Nm to ensure it is the undisputed king of the AMG GT range.
