Not even General Motors could wait until next month’s official reveal of the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The US auto giant dropped these images of the all-new track-honed version of the mid-engined sports car.

The silver machine shows off some of the new elements we’re expecting with the Z06, including a more aggressive front end design and unique side intakes. It also sits on new-look alloy wheels, which are expected to be wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 prototype has appeared with this prominent rear wing suggesting a ‘track pack’ will be available

A second image, of a camouflaged Z06 on track appears to confirm the speculation that Chevrolet will offer the Z06 with a specific ‘track pack’ that will include a larger rear wing. Several prototypes have been spied at Germany’s Nurburgring during development, often with the large rear wing but sometimes without which suggest the company is tuning both variants for track use.
GM also revealed a sketch of the Z06 that shows the original dramatic intention of the designers, with the Z06 looking more like a Le Mans Prototype than a production car.

While the company hasn’t confirmed any technical details, the Z06 is widely expected to get a unique engine, a 5.5-litre V8 with a flat plane crack, directly inspired by the brand’s C8.R racing car.

This sketch makes it clear the designers had racing intentions for the new Corvette Z06

The new V8 will replace the 6.2-litre V8 in the C8 Stingray, but will make more grunt, with it tipped to punch out 460kW of power and 651Nm of torque (compared to 370kW/640Nm in the Stingray).

GM will reveal all the details about the Z06 in a special event on October 26, but it’s unclear when GM’s Australian operation, General Motors Speciality Vehicles, could get its hands on the Z06 (assuming it’s made in right-hand drive, which seems highly likely). The first batch of C8 Stingrays are due in the country before the end of the year with more on the way in 2022.
