Australian-first motorcycle rules in effect from today
From July 1, all learner and provisional motorcycle riders from New South Wales must wear approved gloves, a first for the nation.
New South Wales is leading the way to better protect its most inexperienced motorcycle riders, with a revolutionary new rule coming into effect from today.
As of July 1, 2026, all learner (L-plate) and provisional (P-plate) riders (P1 and P2) are required to wear approved protective gloves when riding.
It’s the first time such a rule has been implemented in Australia, and follows similar requirements in France and Spain.
Only gloves which comply with European Standard EN 13594:2015 adhere to the new road rules, with the labelling or marking by the manufacturer required to be clear.
The gloves can either be ‘level 1’ gloves (which are lighter and more flexible), or ‘level 2’ gloves (which are heavier duty). Failure to comply with the rules will result in a two demerit point penalty, as well as a fine of approximately $275.
According to the NSW Government, wearing certified motorcycle gloves can reduce hand and wrist injuries by 45 per cent.
On top of this, learner riders are also now required to wear an approved high-visibility (hi-vis) vest or jacket when riding.
Only those which comply with one of the following standards are compliant; AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 – Class D/N, AS 4602.1:2024 – Class D/N, and ISO 20471:2013.
