BYD Shark 6 recall: Every ute sold in Australia impacted

BYD Australia has instigated the recall of 32,009 examples of the Shark 6 ute, due to a fault which could lead the spare wheel to detach.

"For involved vehicles, BYD has identified that in certain circumstances incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable," BYD said.

"Continued movement and friction during vehicle operation may cause the cable to fail, resulting in spare wheel detachment. This may create a hazard to other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death."

The recall impacts all three variants of the Shark 6, from the long-serving Premium grade (28,543 vehicles), the Performance flagship (2100 examples), and the Dynamic cab-chassis (1366 vehicles).

Owners of the Shark 6 can use BYD’s Vehicle Recall Information online tool to confirm their vehicle is affected, requiring the input of the ute’s 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Impacted Shark 6s will be fitted with an updated spare wheel lifter assembly as a part of the recall, though in the meantime BYD has urged owners to remove the spare wheel while they wait for the work to be carried out.

BYD has encouraged owners to contact their preferred dealer to arrange the recall to be completed.
