Chery’s Omoda X revealed as rugged-looking Toyota RAV4 rival
Chinese giant Chery has uncovered the Omoda X, a new off-road oriented SUV with chunky tyres, decent towing ability, and a camera to help dodge late-night wildlife.
The expansion of the Omoda sub-brand continues, with Chery taking covers off the X in China as a preview of its next mid-sized SUV.
A design concept for now, the Omoda X shows what the brand’s upcoming mainstream SUV offering will look like, featuring an angular body and hefty all-terrain tyres.
Measuring 4650mm long, 1910mm wide and 1720mm tall, the Omoda X is slightly larger than a Toyota RAV4 across all dimensions, and it’s believed to still be a five-seater, sitting below the Omoda 9, the brand’s current three-row offering.

With a lower front bumper protector, boxy wheel arches and chamfered rear overhang, the Omoda X’s intentions to go off-road are clear.
Fitted with 19-inch wheels and all-terrain tyres, the brand claims the Omoda X will have 200mm of ground clearance, and be able to wade in water more than 700mm deep.
Chery also claims a braked towing capacity of 1800kg for the Omoda X, which is in the ballpark of similarly sized SUVs, such as the RAV4 which boasts a 1900kg claim.

Though no photos of the interior have been released, Omoda says the X’s cabin has a “twin-wing layout and X-shaped floating centre console”.
In front of the driver sits a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, next to a 13.2-inch central touchscreen, with the brand declaring there are also “physical controls for frequently used functions”, such as the climate control and drive mode settings.
One of its most innovative features will be the fitment of an infrared thermal imaging night vision system, capable of detecting potential hazards 90 metres away.

No technical specifications have been locked in yet, though the Omoda X will be available as a fully electric vehicle (EV) as well as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), across both front- and all-wheel drive layouts.
While yet to be confirmed for Australia, it’s believed the Omoda X is on the radar of Omoda Jaecoo.
"It’s exciting to see the innovative products coming from our global headquarters, and the reveal of the Omoda X marks another significant step forward for the brand", said Omoda Jaecoo Australia Chief Commercial Officer, Roy Munoz.
Omoda Jaecoo was spun out as a sub-brand of Chery locally last year, and in 2026 delivered 15,456 vehicles between January and the end of September – with 11,193 of those being for the J5.
