Toyota RAV4 PHEV recalled
Almost 6000 examples of Toyota’s new RAV4 plug-in hybrid have been recalled in Australia, due to a fault which could result in its electric motor not functioning.
Toyota Australia has recalled 5925 examples of the RAV4 PHEV, after it was discovered the SUV’s electric motor may not operate correctly at higher speeds.
“Due to a manufacturing issue with the motor generator electronic control unit (MG-ECU), the motor initialisation process may not complete correctly,” the recall notice says.
“This may prevent the electric motor from operating as intended at higher speeds.

“If the electric motor does not operate as intended, warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle may enter fail-safe mode or shut down, resulting in a loss of motive power. A loss of motive power whilst driving increases the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”
According to Toyota, owners of affected vehicles will be contacted in writing to request they make an appointment at their preferred Toyota dealer who will rectify the vehicle, free of charge.
