COMING SOON: Corvette EV sedan and SUV

Chevrolet wants to expand the Corvette range beyond the sports car and into an electric future

Who: American giant Chevrolet
What: New electric performance cars
When: By 2025
Why: Chevy wants to expand the Corvette nameplate beyond the sports car

Chevrolet has already confirmed an electric Corvette is coming. What they haven’t said but looks increasingly likely is that the Corvette nameplate will expand to a new all-electric sports sedan and sporty SUV by the middle of the decade.

There have been various reports from multiple US-based outlets in recent months that Chevrolet is working on a new electric sports sedan to wear the Camaro name, but now that appears to be not the case.

ROAD TEST: 2022 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray review

Muscle Cars and Trucks reports that while the electric sports sedan is definitely coming, it will instead be carrying the Corvette name. This is part of a wider plan from Chevrolet to expand the Corvette nameplate across multiple models to help it lead the brand into an electric future.

The plan is similar to Ford’s decision to expand the Mustang name but using it for the electric Mustang Mach-E, which leverages the brand’s most iconic badge for a new generation of vehicles.
While the battery-powered Corvette sports car will likely lead the charge, it will merely be laying the foundations for what’s to come. The Corvette sports sedan (let’s call it Corvette SS ) will give the brand a rival to the likes of the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT.

The upcoming Cadillac Celestiq is likely to share its electric underpinnings with the Corvette sports sedan and SUV

The Corvette-badged sports sedan will only be the beginning, with a new SUV to follow soon after. This SUV will give Chevrolet a counterpunch to the Mustang Mach-E as well as potentially challenging the likes of the Audi e-tron, Tesla Model X and incoming Porsche Macan EV.

All three models are expected to make use of General Motors’ Ultimum modular electric vehicle platform. This is what’s already underneath the GMC Hummer but it can be scaled smaller for other models, as demonstrated by the new Chevrolet Blazer EV and upcoming Cadillac Lyriq and Celestiq.

Timing is hard to predict, but the reports suggest the Corvette SS and SUV could arrive as soon as 2025 to help take GM’s electric future into high gear.
