Lewis Hamilton drives the Mercedes-AMG GT 63

Simply watching Lewis Hamilton thrash the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupe around a racetrack is a masterclass in smoothness.

In the below video, which puts you in the passenger seat, Hamilton rips along Mercedes-Benz’s private test track, its Test and Technology Centre in Immendingen, far south-western Germany. He rides the kerbs hard and is delicate with his inputs as the V8 snarls – this is a car we can’t wait to drive.

It’s the new AMG GT 63 coupe, built on an entirely new platform but still powered by the brand’s thumping 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. Power is 430kW and torque 800Nm, driving all four wheels. Zero to 100km/h takes just 3.2 seconds (claimed), on to a top speed of 315km/h.

The new model is expected to arrive in Australia this year and, judging by the video where Hamilton hits 220km/h, it’s going to be plenty of car. Local pricing is yet to be announced.

As for the mysterious track, it belongs to Mercedes-Benz and is known simply as the Handling Circuit, 4.7km long and modelled off the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

The Immendingen facility in which it’s housed is a dreamy playground for anyone who loves cars, set over a sprawling 520 hectares. There 30 possible combinations of circuit, totalling 68 kilometres, combining bitumen and gravel options. As well as the private circuit, there’s a 4km banked oval track, a 7.1km Rough Road circuit, off-roading tracks and an enormous 100,000 square-metre skidpan.

Enough of our muttering, though. Watch and enjoy:
