Cupra Australia has announced pricing for the long-awaited Leon VZx Sportstourer, filling the hole left by the now-defunct and once-popular Volkswagen Golf R wagon.

Priced from $67,490 before on-road costs or $72,490 drive-away nationwide, the VZx Sportstourer is the most performance-focused variant of the Cupra Leon lineup, offering more power and torque than its siblings, while also scoring all-wheel drive.

Curiously, the VZx Sportstourer’s list price is only $2500 dearer than the front-drive Leon VZx hatchback, and $2500 lower than the less potent VZe Sportstourer, which is a plug-in hybrid.

Powering the Cupra Leon VZx Sportstourer is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 245kW and 420Nm, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Those outputs are on par with the Golf R hatchback, and are a 10kW increase on the last time the Golf R wagon was sold here in 2023, when it was priced from $71,990 plus on-roads.

It also represents a step up from the front-drive Leon VZx hatch’s 221kW/400Nm figures, as well as the plug-in hybrid VZe Sportstourer’s 200kW/400Nm outputs from its electric motor and turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine.

The Leon VZx Sportstourer also benefits from the torque-vectoring differential system as found in the Golf R and Audi S3, which can allow more power to be sent to the rear wheels, and even incorporates a drift mode.

Cupra claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.8 seconds for the Leon VZx Sportstourer, almost a full second faster than the hatch.

Standard on the VZx Sportstourer are forged 19-inch ‘Hailstorm’ wheels, adaptive dampers (branded as Dynamic Chassis Control), cross-drilled brakes, leather-appointed interior upholstery, heated front seats, a power tailgate and Sennheiser sound system.

For an additional $7600, buyers can option the Extreme Package, which adds six-piston Akebono front brakes, ‘Cup’ carbon fibre front bucket seats (upholstered in Enceladus Grey Seaqual and Dinamica), Matrix Ultra LED headlights, dark exterior accents, and ‘upgraded performance hardware’.

Deliveries of the Cupra Leon VZx Sportstourer begin in late 2026.
