Lexus is plotting a sports car-rivaling LC F high-performance coupe.
As part of the Gazoo Racing press release announcing the Japanese luxury brand’s assault on the 2020 Nurburgring 24-hours, the company revealed it’s working on an all-new twin-turbo V8 engine. The engine will be tested to its limits in next year’s race in an updated version of its current LC500 entry, but according to the company it’s “destined for use on future road cars such as sports cars.”
The most likely candidate would be the LC, the flagship coupe of the range, where it could either replace the current 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 or sit above it in a new range-topping LC F model.
Lexus hasn’t revealed any details of the engine aside from its cylinder count and forced induction, but if it’s a new engine it’s likely to be smaller in capacity than the current 5.0-litre, we’d tip a 4.0-litre unit similar to Mercedes-AMG and BMW.
The new engine could eventually replace the 5.0-litre V8 entirely, given it should be more efficient, which means it may power the next-generation RC F and GS F models from the brand’s F Sport division.
