Testing and development of new vehicles can be risky business, as the occupants of this Mercedes-AMG GT unfortunately found out.

A video uploaded to Instagram by user @kikisnevada_pgarage shows the in-development AMG GT ablaze in the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges in Spain, having reportedly been undergoing testing in the region.

The poster claims its occupants were unharmed and tried to stop the fire with fire extinguishers they were carrying, but to no avail.

It’s understood the AMG GT had a similar powertrain to the current GT 63 S E Performance, which mates a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine to a plug-in hybrid system, consisting of an electric motor and a 400-volt, 4.8kWh battery.

Mercedes-AMG is yet to comment on the cause of the fire, which is understood to be under investigation.

It’s not the first time the carmaker has had to deal with one of its hero models catching fire, after not one but two AMG One hypercars have been lost to separate blazes within the past three years.
