The new Michelin Pilot Sport 5

Tyres are the only thing that keeps your car in contact with the road, so picking the right one is vital. Which is why the launch of the new Michelin Pilot Sport 5 (PS5) should be exciting for any driving enthusiast.

If you’ve paid attention to our Torquecafe reviews you will have noticed that cars with Pilot Sport tyres often shine in the handling department, because the rubber is noticeably more grippy and consistent compared to many rivals. These cars include the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 (PS2) and Ford Mustang Mach 1 (PS4), with the French brand a preferred supplier for many manufacturers.

The new PS5 tyres take lessons from motorsport and introduce more longevity into the construction – think of them as the ‘hard compound’ choice. These have been designed to still provide plenty of grip but provide more endurance, as marketing manager for Michelin Australia, Hugo De-Boischevalier, explained.

“With the Michelin Pilot Sport 5, Michelin further strengthens our complete and best overall high-performance Pilot Sport range, with ‘Performance Made to Last’ being our key differentiator,” De-Boischevalier said. “Inspired by motorsports, the tyre is perfect for drivers who demand sporty driving performance and expect nothing but the best.”

Some of the key features for the PS5 include ‘Dual Sport Tread Design’ technology, which combines large grooves on the inside of the tread to channel water in the wet but rigid blocks on the outer tread for better grip on dry surfaces.

Michelin hasn’t just designed them to perform well either, they also look good, winning a 2021 Contemporary Good Design Award. That’s in large part thanks to the ‘Premium Touch Sidewall Design’ that features a matte-black aesthetic to give the PS5 a unique look.

Michelin will launch the PS5 in 42 dimensions, ranging from 17- to 21-inch wheels beginning on April 4.
