Shock! Electric Ford Mustang unveiled

Ford has built an electric Mustang. But before you V8 fans get upset they’ve turned a muscle car into a golf cart, know this – it’s packing 670kW of power and 1355Nm of torque!

The blue oval teamed up with battery maker Webasto to create the Mustang Lithium project for the 2019 SEMA Show. It’s timing is no accident either, with Ford ramping up its electrification plans with the launch of the “Mustang-inspired” electric SUV on November 17.

The regular 5.0-litre V8 was replaced by an 800-volt Webasto battery system with EVDrive Technology. But unlike traditional EVs which typically use single-speed automatic transmissions, the Lithium gets a six-speed manual gearbox from specialists Getrag that utilise drag-strip specification internals to cope with all the torque.

It’s not all about straight-line performance though, with the Lithium getting Ford Performance’s Track Handling Pack and the same six-piston Brembo brakes you’ll find on the Shelby GT350R. It rides on 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

“Ford has made no secret of the fact that we are electrifying our most popular nameplates,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product development officer.

“This one-off Mustang prototype is a great opportunity for us, together with Webasto, to showcase to our customers what new electrified powertrains can do for performance in a car they already know and love.”
