Volkswagen design boss shows the supercar we’ll never get
Despite being a giant of the automotive industry, Volkswagen has never made a supercar, even if that was what one intern wanted.
Almost every major carmaker has built something which could be defined as a supercar, though for Volkswagen that has always remained elusive.
The Volkswagen W12 was the closest it ever got, however we never got to see it become reality, and now there’s been another design which will never see the light of day.
Shared by the Volkswagen Group’s head of design, Andreas Mindt, on Instagram, the executive posted images of the ID.DIN T14, an internship project by German student Fabian Reitz.
Designed to be a part of Volkswagen’s electric ID family, the car shares all the hallmarks of a supercar or at least a spicy sports car, with a long bonnet, low-set roof, short rear overhangs and wide arches.

The lack of a traditional driveline led to the design featuring a huge rear diffuser to increase downforce, while there are multiple channels on the body to direct air backwards as efficiently as possible.
“For his internship project, Fabian explored how precision, structure and functionality can become the starting point for a distinctive automotive design study,” Mindt wrote.
“The result is a bold concept with clear proportions, reduced surfaces and a strong graphic character – inspired by the visual world of technical drawings, grids and functional details.”
Unfortunately it doesn’t appear that we’ll see Reitz’s idea in the flesh anytime soon, amid Volkswagen’s back-to-basics approach amid rising competition from China.
