Nissan’s next Patrol is making its latest steps towards Australian showrooms, with the first right-hand drive examples of the popular SUV being built in Japan ahead of its 2027 local arrival.

Due to arrive in Australia in the first quarter of 2027 (January to March), the Y63 Patrol has already been on sale in left-hand drive markets such as the Middle East and North America (as the Armada) for close to two years, but the first right-hand drive versions will be sold Down Under.

According to Nissan, the new ladder-frame chassis underpinning the Y63 Patrol features larger frame side members than the Y62 it replaces, resulting in a 40 per cent increase in torsional rigidity, while claimed to also lead to better noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), handling and ride comfort.

The new Patrol’s body also sees a “significant increase” in how much high-strength steel has been used in its construction, now up to 27 per cent of its body structure – up 21 per cent from the SUV it replaces.

These are factors behind why the Y63 Patrol will be available with a braked towing capacity of up to 3700kg when it arrives in Australia, the highest of any SUV on sale locally.

This eclipses the industry standard 3500kg for big SUVs, and beats the 6.2-litre V8-powered GMC Yukon’s 3628kg capacity.

According to Nissan, Patrol buyers will be able to “choose from a range of tow tongue and tow ball configurations available as an at-cost accessory, including a configuration supporting the Patrol's full 3700kg braked towing capacity.”

Though yet to be confirmed, it’s understood the 3700kg towing capacity will only be available through the use of a 70mm tow ball, as local regulations prevent towing any more than 3500kg with a 50mm ball.

The Patrol’s twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 produces 317kW and 700Nm, making it 4kW and 76Nm more potent than the Yukon.

As previously reported, every example of the Y63 Patrol sold globally features a rear differential housing which has been made at the Nissan Casting Australia Plant (NCAP) in Dandenong South, just 40km south-east of the Melbourne CBD.

Despite running on an all-new chassis, the Y63 Patrol shares the same 3075mm wheelbase as the Y62, though the 2027 model is significantly bigger inside and out.

The Y63’s measurements of 5205mm long, 2030mm wide and 1955 mm tall make it 40mm longer, 35mm wider and 15mm taller than the outgoing model.

Nissan will offer six variants of the Y63 Patrol in Australia, doubling the current lineup of three on sale for the Y62.
