Cadillac has revealed plans for its fastest, most track-focused vehicles yet.
A new badge, Blackwing, will be applied to the American luxury brand’s “ultra-high-performance” models that will do battle with the best from Mercedes’ AMG, BMW’s M Division and Audi Sport. These new vehicles will sit above the company’s already highly-tuned V-Series performance cars, adding a new level of performance to the brand.
The first cars to receive this new treatment will be the CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing which are due to go on sale in the US later in 2020 and early in 2021. They will upgrade the already available CT4-V, which has a 242kW 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and the CT5-V, which packs a 268kW 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6.
Cadillac says the Blackwing upgrades will include extra chassis tuning, recalibrated stability systems and more powerful engines. They will also be available with manual transmissions for purists. Testing is already well underway on both cars and included track time at Virginia International Raceway, where they set new benchmark times for the brand.
“The Blackwing name has come to represent the very best of Cadillac performance engineering, craftsmanship and technology,” explained Brandon Vivian, Cadillac executive chief engineer. “The new CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing build on the brand’s respected legacy of ultimate-performance driving experiences and elevate them even further.”
While General Motors is in the process of closing Holden operations in Australia it has stated it wants to maintain a presence in the local market with a range of specialty vehicles. The high-performance Cadillac sedans could fit that niche, given Australia’s preference for sports sedans but there has been no official word about their chances. GM Specialty Vehicles is expected to be a partnership between General Motors and Holden Special Vehicles, which has transitioned to re-manufacturing left-hand drive vehicles – including the Chevrolet Camaro and Silverado models – since the end of Holden manufacturing.
